From rare to well done: an app cooked to perfection.
Redesign the MEATER mobile app to unify its capabilities into a cohesive, modern, user-centered experience.
6 months
Situation
MEATER, a leading Bluetooth cooking thermometer company, needed a complete redesign of its mobile app. Over time, the app had accumulated fragmented features, and users—particularly those new to the brand—were unable to access key functions before purchasing the product. This limitation not only affected user exploration but also disqualified the app from being featured on the iOS App Store, where ~80% of users discover MEATER.

Action
Results
Stakeholders selected the Revolution prototype, citing its clarity and innovation.
The redesign enabled the app to become eligible for iOS App Store inclusion, unlocking a major acquisition channel (~80% of user base).
Reduced the multi-probe cooking setup steps from 10+ steps to 3 simple steps.
Reduced average onboarding time from 2 min to less than 1 minute.
Positioned MEATER to remain competitive in a fast-growing IoT kitchen device market.
Competitor Analysis
We conducted an in house competitor analysis using each the app and thermometer from our top five rivals on the cooking thermometer market. We then compared that to the MEATER product.
Each category was given a score between 1-5 (5 being the best)
Ideation

User Flows
Rapid Prototyping
To place the fruit of the ideation process clearly in the minds of our stakeholders. Two rapid prototyping versions were created:
Evolution- not straying too far off the proposed wireframes. Less innovation in component use and design.
Revolution- A premium user centered design that got our design juices flowing with fresh components and mobile functionality.
Delightfully, stakeholders were on board with the latter!
Styles & Components
New color suite to tie branding into the app flow and new components (like a parallax scroll and video elements) to mirror the latest developments in UI design capabilitties.
High Fidelity Prototype
The final design was created in both an iOS UI kit and a Material UI kit to make the handoff to developer collaborators as smooth as possible. I believe strongly in the the importance of working hand in hand with the engineering team to achieve not only the best possible design but also foster comradery in the workflow.
The design required an overhaul of our mobile files, on both the design and engineering end. But we were able to create something which seamlessly embedded itself within the MEATERverse while generating exciting new components and gifts for new and returning users alike.
Usability Testing
We created a script that took our participants through three cooking scenerios. We tested new assets and gathered feedback and insights along the way.
Next Steps
Although the redesign received strong stakeholder support and usability validation, the company decided to reprioritize engineering resources due to shifting business goals and product roadmap changes.
As a result, development of the new app experience was paused and is projected to resume in 2026, when the next hardware release is scheduled.
This pivot reflects a strategic alignment, not a reflection of the design quality—which continues to be referenced as the blueprint for MEATER's future digital experience.
My design system, high-fidelity prototypes, and research documentation are already prepared for seamless handoff and implementation when development resumes.
